Mr.
Aziz A. Munshi has taken over the charge of
Attorney General of Pakistan, for the fourth
time. He was Attorney General of Pakistan for
the year 1985-86, 1988, and 1990 to 1993. On all
three occasions, he resigned from his office as
Attorney General.
He
appeared in most of the important constitutional
cases in the Supreme Court and High Courts,
involving dissolution of the National Assembly
and the Provincial Assemblies.
He
defended the dissolution of the National
Assembly under the former Article 58(2)(b) of
the Constitution in the cases filed by Haji
Saifullah Khan (1998) Khawaja Tariq Rahim
(1989), Aftab Sherpao (1989) and Nawaz Sharif
(1993).
He
is a Constitutional Lawyer and is said to be the
author of Constitutional legislation,
particularly those relating to the 8th
Constitutional Amendment, enacted by the
Parliament in 1985 to bring about a smooth
transition from Martial Law to Civilian
government through the Constitutional
amendments.
Son
of a judge and nephew of late Mr. I. I
Chundrigar, Mr. Munshi started legal practice as
the junior in chambers of late Mr. I.I
Chundrigar in the year 1955 at Karachi and was
closely associated with him till Mr.
Chundrigar’s death in 1960.
Mr.
Chundrigar was Law Minister of Pakistan and was
one of the closest and trusted associates of
Quaid-e-Azam.
Mr.
Munshi attended several Institutional
Conferences including Asian African Legal
Consultative Conference of 46 Members countries
at Cairo in April 1991 where he was unanimously
elected as Vice Chairman.
